On 22 and 24 May 2018, the Secretariat of the State Commission on Migration Issues, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration Georgia Mission organized meetings with Kakheti and Imereti municipalities on the ground.

At the meetings, which were facilitated by the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and the governors’ administrations, the SCMI Secretariat discussed the role of migration and its development potential, capitalizing on its main integral components such as remittances, diaspora engagement and temporary labour (circular) migration. The successful practical examples implemented worldwide and the experience accumulated in Georgia so far have been touched upon as well.

The IOM representative informed participants of the meeting about the projects and activities already implemented by IOM Georgia in the field of migration and development, and presented the planned initiatives that include capacity building of the municipality representatives aimed at facilitating mainstreaming migration in local development planning.

The meetings with municipalities were held within the frames of the EU Funded Projects “Support to Sustained Effective Functioning of the State Commission on Migration Issues” and “Sustaining Border Management and Migration Governance in Georgia” (SBMMG).
